Schets van een Varing | Adéle du Plessis Flora | Painting of Flora
This small 30cm x 40 cm egg tempera artwork showcases an exquisitely rendered floral composition. Except it is a small cutting of a fern painted larger than life. The artist, first sketched the fern no more than 8cm, a study of light and the coiled ferns leaves. She then painted the pencil sketch in egg tempera. The painting is at the same time, marked by a refined, yet abstracted, depiction of a small cutting of a fern not yet unfurled. The fern blown up, seems almost floral and the elements are rendered in shades of vibrant blue and white, creating a striking contrast against the subdued, almost minimalist, light green background. The brushwork is expressive and bold, with thick, undulating strokes that give the flowers a sense of dynamic movement and life. Egg tempera, dires fast, so there is very little chance to mix colours before they dry. The material used to paint leans into abstract brush strokes, that hold their pigmented colour that does not bleed into other colours.
This serves to highlight the artist's skilled manipulation of texture and depth, making each fern leaf and stem appear both tangible and ethereal. The use of colour is particularly noteworthy—the blue tones imbue the composition with tranquillity and depth, while the white accents add a layer of purity and freshness. The background, intentionally devoid of intricate details, allows the viewer to fixate entirely on the floral subject, emphasizing its elegance and simplicity. This minimalistic approach to the background not only enhances the visual impact of the flowers but also invokes a serene and contemplative mood, providing a perfect balance between stillness and movement. Overall, this artwork is a masterful celebration of natural beauty, executed with precision and an eye for detail. It beckons the viewer to appreciate the delicate, transient beauty of small moments, creating a mesmerizing visual experience that is both captivating and serene.
