Left Behind XI | Marko Klomp | Landscape Painting

Left Behind XI is a large oil painting depicting a beautiful blue sky, with fluffy clouds and a bird flying free in the vastness of it all. The painting is reminiscent of Italian villa frescoes. Frescoes (pigment painted into wet plaster) were painted into walls and ceilings to decorate lavish villas and churches. In villa's life-size landscapes and depictions of the clear sky created the optical illusion of being outside, while inside, as well as enlarging a space. And that's exactly what this painting creates, a window into another world, far above the horizon, with no land, human or technology in sight. It's an optical escape into freedom and lightness.

Marko paints in a distinctive "soft focus" style. Also known as sfumato. The image is built up of layers and layers of thin oil paints that create the hazy effect. Like you are looking at the image through the unfocused lens of a camera.

As one tries to get closer to the painting to see the detail, the bird is a visual point of detail. Marko's paintings are simultaneously beautiful, graceful works of art while harbouring complex philosophical meditations at their core. Marko's work is quiet works of beauty and guided visual imagery to explore complex thoughts about living in our current society and state of being.

Marko has been perfecting his style for decades since graduating from the prestigious St Joost art School in Breda, The Netherlands. He is also part of the prestigious artist club Pulchri Studio in The Hague, The Netherlands.
