Left Behind IV by Marko Klomp | Wildlife Painting
In Left Behind IX we see a single bird of prey in the vast blue skies. The isolation in this painting is not as painful, as in other paintings in the series. Yet the bird is and always will be outside our grasp. In real life a Bird of Prey is only visible for a short time, before it moves on. In paint the bird is forever captured in this moment of flight, in our sight. Seeing a bird of prey in the wild is always special. As is seeing any animal in the wild, but a bird of prey has lived in our human consciousness as a magical emblem of power, freedom and flight. Many of the other animals in this series are etched into our minds together with conservation efforts and our failure to protect them. Left Behind nine and ten, with birds of prey, create a whole other dynamic. The single wildlife animal in a vast landscape is still the core subject, but the tone is drastically different. Fighting hope, rather than desolation..
The top 90% of the painting is a stunningly blue sky as far as the eye can see. The lowest sliver of the painting hints at a landmass. Marko presents an altered Dutch landscape composition. Dutch landscapes are known to take up an ample space of the canvas for the sky, and the clouds as the flat Dutch landscape allows for an uninterrupted view of sky and cloud formation. Usually, the landscape takes 1/3 of the painting and the skies 2/3 of the painting. In this painting, less than 1/10 of the composition suggests a landmass. One's view is that the air is uninterrupted. Left Behind nine is painted in Marko's signature "soft focus" style. His carefully layered oil paintings are hyper-realistic yet unfocused—the single wildlife in his "Left Behind" Series, the only in-focus element in the painting.
Left Behind Series
Marko Klomp often paints in series. Which means that they all follow the same theme or inspiration. Marko has painted songs in his series Cantima and he has painted women. Left Behind I is a new series Marko Klomp started in 2019. In each of these painting Marko Klomp paints in his signature 'soft focus' style a vast landscape with a singular animal figure. The work in this series is very large and the sense of isolation is painfully poetic in each piece.
