Jeanette Olyhoek is a Dutch painter and sculptor in Voorburg. Her amazing Dutch seascapes and landscapes are currently on exhibition at the Gallery. The interview was in Dutch, but is translated into English with the original Dutch answers put below. Jeanette kindly took the time us to answer these 11 questions about her and her art.

The makings of an Artist
1. Jeanette tell us a bit about yourself.
My name is Jeanette Olyhoek, I am 63 years old, and for 10 years, I have been involved in painting, mainly en Plein air, and sculpting in stone. I am currently following art history colleagues at the Free Academy in The Hague.

Ik ben Jeanette Olyhoek, ik ben 63 jaar en sinds 10 jaar houd ik mij bezig met schilderen, het meest en plein-air, en beeldhouwen in steen. Momenteel volg ik collega’s kunstgeschiedenis aan de Vrije Academie in Den Haag.
2. How did you start with painting?
In 2009 I went with a friend to Ben Stolk's (1957 - ) studio in Rijswijk, where a student exhibition was going on. I got goosebumps and jitters and thought: I want that too!
I started there.
At the same time, I had drawing lessons from Reza Shalileh (1955 - ), an Iranian artist who taught me the most important thing, namely look!
After that, I learned the craft of oil painting from Arjan van Gent (1970 - ). Various techniques, including the technique of the old masters, Fresco technique (Verdaccio) and Alla prima, the wet in wet method to be able to paint outside smoothly (en Plein-air). I also started sculpting at the Voorburg artist Frans Kokshoorn (?).

Hoe ben je begonnen met wat je nu doet?
In 2009 ging ik met een vriendin mee naar het atelier van Ben Stolk in Rijswijk waar een leerling tentoonstelling gaande was. Ik kreeg kippenvel en de kriebels en dacht: dat wil ik ook!
Ik ben daar begonnen.
Tegelijkertijd heb ik tekenles gehad van Reza Shalileh een Iraanse kunstenaar die mij het belangrijkste heeft geleerd namelijk kijken!
Daarna heb ik het ambacht olieverven geleerd van Arjan van Gent. Diverse technieken waaronder de techniek van de oude meesters, Fresco techniek (Verdaccio) en Alla prima, het nat in nat techniek om vlot buiten te kunnen schilderen (en plein-air).
Ook ben ik gaan beeldhouwen bij de Voorburgse kunstenaar Frans Kokshoorn.

3. Who are your role models?
Gosh, role models…. I am most happy with the French Impressionists and the painters of the Hague School.

Nature!

5. Tell us about your art.
I like to paint en Plein air, mainly in the beautiful dune area and the sea near Wassenaar and Katwijk, or wherever I am, Zeeland, Normandy, always the coast...
I use oil paint for my paintings because that is just is the finest and has the most beautiful colours.
My stone sculptures are often created with the Waist Direct method, a method in which you let yourself be guided by the stone and therefore never know exactly what will arise....
That's the magic!
The same happens with my abstract paintings; with sand, plaster and paint, you create something that occurs entirely by itself...
I only determine the colours myself. Then when it is finished, turn the screen until you see the position where everything is in balance and representations appear. Pure magic!

Vertel ons iets over uw kunst.
Ik schilder graag en plein-air, veelal in het mooie duingebied en de zee bij Wassenaar en Katwijk, of waar ik dan ook ben, Zeeland, Normandië, toch wel steeds de kust....
Ik gebruik olieverf voor mijn schilderijen omdat dat gewoon het fijnste is en de mooiste kleuren heeft. Mijn stenen beelden komen vaak tot stand met de methode Taille directe, een methode waarbij je je laat leiden door de steen en dus eigenlijk nooit precies weet wat er ontstaat.... Dat is de magie!
Hetzelfde gebeurt met mijn abstracte schilderijen; met zand en gips en verf maak je iets wat geheel uit zichzelf ontstaat..
Alleen de kleuren bepaal ik zelf. Dan als het klaar is, het doek draaien tot je de positie ziet waarin alles in balans is en er voorstellingen in verschijnen.
Pure magie!
6. What is your most memorable experience as an artist?
A group of ladies came to to an exhibition. They had already been at the location before, and they always found it a bit gloomy. Whereas because of my paintings, they now said they were delighted to be in the space!

Wat is je meest memorabele ervaring als kunstenaar?
Dat er tijdens een expositie een clubje dames kwam kijken die al eerder bij dezelfde locatie waren geweest, het altijd een beetje somber vonden en die nu vertelden helemaal blij te worden in de ruimte! (Door de schilderijen!)

7. What is your greatest fear as an artist?
It seems terrible if I ever run out of inspiration...

Het lijkt me vreselijk als ik ooit geen inspiratie meer zou voelen ...
8. In retrospect, what would you like to understand better before you started as an artist?
Gosh… I don't think you "start" as an artist. I just started filling in a desire... and that was painting; the rest followed by itself.

Terugkijkend, wat zou je beter willen begrijpen voordat je was begonnen als kunstenaar?
Jeetje… Je “begint “niet als kunstenaar volgens mij. Ik ben gewoon begonnen met het invullen van een verlangen...
en dat was schilderen, de rest volgde vanzelf.

9. What are the strategies that have helped you succeed on your journey here?

I think I have had good teachers so that the quality of my work is guaranteed.

Parting thoughts
Jeanette had a very round about and late start in the arts. Many people go to art shows and think or say: 'I could do that!'. What separates the artist from the critic, is that in this moment an artist was born. She left inspired, instead of pessimistic. She educated herself, and she practiced and refined her craft. Some people set out to become and artist and others take a longer route. In the essence art is about making and interacting with our world.
Jeanette is enthralled in the wonderous experience of creating art. Her own enjoyment of the magical creation of paintings exudes in her work. My hair becomes windswept and my body is transported to the beach as I look at one of her paintings in the warmth and comfort of my home. Her paintings are romantic sublime land-, and seascapes, that hold the elements of nature in its severe and beautiful states.
